In France during the Revolution of 1848, Jean Valjean is released from prison after 19 years for stealing silver from a rich bishop's house to survive. On one such good deed he meets Cosette who's willing to suffer any hardship with the then penniless man because she loves him unconditionally. The years go by and the world has changed. The French monarchy has been overthrown and the class system abolished. Cosette is now a grown woman, engaged to Marius, a young idealist fighting for the working man. In his mission to bring order and peace to Paris after a bloody revolt by the people, Inspector Javert helps quell the uprising – only to find himself face-to-face once again with his convict/friend Jean Valjean. The film traces the love between Cosette and Marius. When Cosette is sick, Valjean returns to save her life. She still has feelings for him and he tries to win her back. When Marius' sister dies in childbirth, Valjean secretly takes her out of poverty while she recovers to give back to society. After he turns himself into the authorities, Jean Valjean is arrested again, prosecuted for having killed a policeman many years before. The judge sentences him to serve life in prison; however, he is later released thanks to the efforts of Vincent (Marius' father), who made it possible by appealing to the man's humanity... In the climax, Jean Valjean sees his way out of being a revolutionary and a fugitive, and has a change of heart. He surrenders to the authorities and is sent to prison for life. Cosette forgives him and forgives herself as well, returning to him with her love – just as he had always wanted – at last. So all ends well for Jean Valjean at last – but not without a heartfelt goodbye from Marius as he rides off into the sunset on his horse, Eponine's letters in hand, on his mission to save Paris from revolution...
